Why users look for alternatives to Chime
Chime covers many basic money needs. Its checking account has no monthly service fee, no minimum opening deposit, and access to more than 47,000 fee-free ATMs. Eligible members can also use SpotMe for fee-free overdraft coverage and receive qualifying direct deposits up to two days early.
That package works well for many people. Still, you may want a different account if you travel often, send money abroad, want different savings terms, or need features that Chime does not offer. You may also want a backup account in case your main card is locked or a transfer is delayed.
Some people search for banks like Chime, but the names in this comparison are not all banks. Chime and Cash App are financial technology platforms that offer banking services through partner banks. Revolut is also not a bank in the US. Wise is a money services business with a multi-currency account.
You need easier foreign currency spending or international transfers.
You want a different ATM network or fee structure.
You want savings interest with rules that better match your income.
You do not receive enough qualifying direct deposits to unlock Chime Plus, Chime Prime, or SpotMe.
You want a second card and balance for emergencies.
Best alternatives by local use case
Cash App is our closest Chime substitute for daily US spending. It has no monthly fee or minimum balance. It offers direct deposit, a debit card, savings, and up to $200 in fee-free overdraft coverage for eligible users. Cash App charges $2.50 for a standard ATM withdrawal. In-network withdrawals become free after you receive at least $300 in qualifying monthly deposits or spend at least $500 with the card in a month. Read our full Cash App review and our guide to Cash App safety.
Wise is our pick for travel and foreign currencies. You can hold more than 40 currencies and spend abroad with the Wise card. There is no monthly account fee, but the physical card costs $9. Wise charges no ATM fee on the first $250 withdrawn per calendar month. After that, each withdrawal costs $1.95 plus 1.95%, and the ATM owner may add a fee. Wise is not a bank or a checking account, and it does not offer an overdraft. See our Wise review before applying.
Revolut may suit people who want one app for US spending and multiple currencies. Its Standard plan has no monthly subscription fee. In-network ATM withdrawals are free, and out-of-network withdrawals on Standard cost up to 2%, plus possible operator fees. Direct deposit may arrive up to two days early. The problem is access: Revolut currently places new US applicants on a waitlist during a partner-bank transition. Read our Revolut review, but do not count on opening an account right away.

How to choose
Start with the job you need the account to do. For regular US paychecks and card purchases, compare direct deposit rules, ATM access, overdraft limits, and savings terms. Cash App is the closest of these apps like Chime, but its best ATM, overdraft, and savings benefits depend on qualifying deposits or card spending.
For travel, Wise has the clearest edge. It can hold many currencies and uses the mid-market exchange rate, with a stated conversion fee when needed. Revolut also supports multiple currencies, but its Standard plan has exchange limits and timing-based fees. More important, new US users cannot open an account at once during the current waitlist.
Check deposit insurance by bank, not just by brand. If you already have money at the same partner bank, those deposits may count toward the same $250,000 limit. Our savings account guide explains what else to compare when interest matters.
A short account checklist
Add up real fees. Include out-of-network ATM charges, card costs, transfer fees, and foreign currency costs.
Check benefit rules. A feature advertised as free may require a set amount of direct deposit or card spending each month.
Confirm access. Make sure you meet age, residency, identity, and Social Security number rules before moving money.
Keep your old account open during the switch. Wait until your pay, bills, and card payments work from the new account.
Review the insured bank. Find the partner bank in your account agreement and include any other deposits you hold there.
When Chime may still be the better choice
Chime remains a strong choice if most of your money stays in US dollars and you use direct deposit. It has no monthly service fee, no minimum opening deposit, and more than 47,000 fee-free ATMs. Its $2.50 out-of-network fee is also easy to understand.
SpotMe can be useful if you qualify. You need at least $200 in qualifying direct deposits each month. The starting limit can be up to $20 and may rise to $200 or more based on account history and other factors. Your limit appears in the app, and unsupported payments are declined instead of causing an overdraft fee.
Chime Savings may also be enough for your goals. Chime uses tiered, variable APYs for standard, Plus, and Prime members. Plus and Prime require qualifying direct deposit activity, so compare the rate you can earn, not only the top advertised rate. Check Chime's current disclosure before moving your savings because APYs can change.
We would not switch just because another app has one better feature. A new account should improve the parts you use each week.
FAQ
These short answers cover the main questions about Chime and its alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Chime?
Cash App is the closest alternative in this comparison for everyday US spending. It offers direct deposit, a debit card, savings, no monthly fee, and fee-free overdraft coverage for eligible users. Wise is better for international use.
Is Chime a bank?
No. Chime is a financial technology company. Banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., which are FDIC members.
Is Revolut accepting new US customers?
Not currently for immediate account opening. Revolut says new US applicants are joining a waitlist during its partner-bank transition. Existing product pages may still show US features and fees.
Can Wise replace a checking account?
No, not in every case. Wise can receive USD payments, hold many currencies, and support card spending, but it is a money services account rather than a bank checking account. It has no overdraft or loan.
Are Chime alternatives FDIC-insured?
Yes, some eligible deposits may have FDIC pass-through coverage through a partner bank. Coverage depends on the product, records, ownership, and other FDIC rules. Wise offers this only for eligible balances when an eligible US user opts into Wise Interest.
